Doris:
Doris came to us desiring to address
some very common issues for many baby-boomers today, older
restorations that are not only causing esthetic issues but
also and most importantly, causing functional problems like
decay or infections. Doris was quite impressed with our approach
to treatment planning because Dr. Canto truly listened and
designed a treatment plan that fit Doris’s desires.
She wanted the old work replaced and also wanted her smile
to look better but she did not want to remove any additional
tooth structure unless absolutely necessary. Doris had an
existing older, porcelain over metal bridge that created those
commonly seen and unwanted “black lines” at the
top of the teeth, due to the metal inside the bridge. The
bridge also had deficient contours and shapes of teeth giving
her a very asymmetrical or uneven appearance of the teeth
from right to left. Doris had ground her teeth and caused
them to be shorter and flatter in the front than they should
be causing a more aged appearance to her smile. She also showed
some old, ugly silver mercury fillings that definitely needed
replacement. With the combination of all of these issues and
a desire to keep as much existing tooth structure as possible,
Dr. Canto created a very conservative smile design for Doris
which included functional as well as cosmetic solutions. Dr.
Canto replaced the existing metal based bridge with a full
ceramic bridge so as to never have to deal with those unsightly
“black lines” and was able to correct the size
and shape discrepancies. Because the mercury fillings were
so large and broken down, the teeth on the back upper left
required full porcelain crowns that blend right in to the
smile. Dr. Canto then completed Doris’s smile rejuvenation
with conservative direct bonding on the remaining upper front
teeth and the lower front teeth. Doris is thrilled with her
new youthful smile that certainly reflects her “go-getter”
spirit!
