Houston Dentist Explains the Difference in Veneers

At our Houston cosmetic dentist office, we provide every type of procedure to ensure all of our dental patients look their very best. It is our goal to give every patient a smile they will want to show off. This often means that patients are given the option between direct bonded veneers and porcelain veneers.

Each patient is evaluated by our dental staff and informed about which procedure would work best for them. For potential patients looking to receive a more beautiful smile, but aren’t sure how to go about it – here is some information you may find helpful.

What Are Direct Bonded Veneers and Porcelain Veneers?

Direct bonded veneers are the more economic choice between the two. These veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth to cover up problematic or unsightly areas of the teeth, primarily those that can easily be seen while smiling or talking. The cost per tooth can range between $450 to $1,000.

“Direct bonded veneers can be less costly up front,” Dr. Amanda Canto, Houston cosmetic dentist, says. “They can be more conservative with little to no tooth structure removal. And they are done in one visit, generally.”

Porcelain veneers are more costly and require more extensive preparation and artistic ability. Typically it takes approximately two to three visits to our Houston dental office to complete a porcelain veneer procedure. During this process, we send the impressions we take of each tooth that will receive a porcelain veneer to our laboratory located in Idaho. The veneers are then sent back to us to place on the patient’s tooth or teeth.

These porcelain veneers last much longer than direct bonded veneers, lasting anywhere between 10 to 20 years. For this reason, among many others, these types of veneers can be more expensive.

“A porcelain veneer is more like a beautiful china plate that will hold its color and its shine and its texture,” Dr. Canto says.
