Why I Love Dental Bonding

My patients often ask me why I love the art of cosmetic bonding. Dental bonding, known in the industry as “Direct-bonding” is an option to traditional veneers which can be a great way to quickly improve a patient’s smile.

Reasons to Love Direct Bonding:

  • Very Conservative: unlike traditional porcelain veneers, very little (if any) structure needs be removed.
  • Very Natural Looking: unlike Lumineers or low-prep veneers, a bonded tooth is hand sculpted for a beautiful translucence and natural appearance.
  • Very Quick: unlike other veneers, I can can sculpt your teeth in a single dental visit so you can walk out with a gorgeous smile makeover in one day!
  • Lower Upfront Costs: unlike other veneers which require multiple visits, the upfront costs for cosmetic bonding are quite low.

In addition to this, I personally just love the art of hand sculpting a tooth to fit the contours of your mouth just perfectly. There are few things more satisfying to me than to be able to hand-craft your teeth, just so… to match both your smile and your personality. The real reward is to watch you smile when you see the results!

Teeth Bonding vs Porcelain Veneers

Direct bonding can be great solution for many cosmetic dental issues. I love it because I can quickly and easily smooth and straighten the look of crooked teeth, and fill in spaces or gaps in the teeth, in a single visit. We can also use composite bonding materials to add length to teeth that appear too short, fixing a “gummy smile” and contributing to a youthful appearance. Composite bonding materials are very durable and can be used to repair cracked and broken teeth.

Are There Drawbacks to Cosmetic Bonding?

Well, as you hear me speak about in the video, one is that because the bonding material is made of a composite silicate resin, it will not hold perfect color as well as porcelain will. Because of this, direct bonded veneers will not last as long as traditional veneers and must be replaced more often. So, even though the upfront cost of the procedure is lower, the overall cost should be about the same as a traditional porcelain veneer which will last longer.

However, for people who are looking to conserve more of the tooth’s natural structure, I always suggest that they learn more about direct-bonded veneers.
