Houston Dentist: When to Receive Porcelain Veneers

There are so many things that contribute to dental issues that make our teeth unattractive, whether teeth discoloration, chipped teeth, or spaces between teeth. Sometimes they are genetic problems, but more often than not, these issues arise due to things we drink (coffee, soda, and other dark drinks), eat (hard candies, food that stains teeth), or not do – like brush twice daily, floss, or rinse with mouthwash.

Over time, the need for dental porcelain veneers increases. Teeth sometimes are too dark or damaged and covering them with veneers is a quick, long-term solution. Placing porcelain veneers, or full-prep veneers, on teeth can be done in just two or three dental visits.

At the Cosmetic Dentists of Houston, Dr. Amanda Canto specializes in making people’s smiles beautiful and natural looking. Our dental office in Houston offers traditional porcelain veneers and low-prep veneers, also known as Lumineers. The reason why porcelain is used at our Houston dental office is because it is more durable than other types of veneers, they are stain-resistant, are very thin and natural looking, and lasts anywhere between 10 and 20 years.

These porcelain veneers are bonded individually to each tooth, allowing Dr. Canto to design and craft your smile to make it as beautiful as possible. With each tooth, an impression is made and that impression is sent to our ceramists to custom make each veneer by hand according to your specific smile.

When Not to Receive Porcelain Veneers

As great as porcelain veneers are for people with unaesthetic teeth, there are times when veneers or Lumineers aren’t the best option and should not be used. Dr. Canto says that these dental options are not for everyone.

“If you are someone who has very heavy grinding or clenching problems, moderate to severe periodontal disease, then porcelain veneers may not be the avenue to take,” she says.

Finding out if you can receive porcelain veneers or lumineers should be decided upon after having your dentist check the health of your teeth and gums.
